Batur Volcano

Batur Volcano, Bangli

Gunung Batur is an active volcano in the center of two round craters northwest of Gunung Agung. The larger crater is 10 km long by 13.5 km wide. Inside the crater is a crescent-shaped lake called Danau Batur. The second crater is 6.4 km long by 9.4 km wide and about 25,000 years old. The top of the new volcano is about 2,159 m high, and it is higher than any other surrounding crater.

In the past it had been much higher, but after the explosion, approximately 30,000 years ago, the crater was formed. Rain has created a small lake over time, yet there is still an active volcano inside and it grows all the time. The lake, which is 3 km wide and about 9 km long, is considered to be holy and it is dedicated to the goddess of the lake, Ida Batara Ulun Dewi Danu. It’s beautiful whatever the angle you look at it, and it is photographed over and over. About 16,000 inhabitants live in this volcanic crater village in the villages of Kedisan, Toya Bungkah, and Kintamani. On the eastern shore of the lake Trunuyan (Bali Aga village), the old traditions of the open cemetery continue. Lately, and mostly, they are involved in agriculture (fruits and vegetables), fishing, and tourism.

On the west coast, in the village of Toya Bungkah, begins the path leading to the top of the volcano. There you can get refreshed and get overnight accommodations, either before or after hiking. You’ll need 2.5 hours of climbing to get to the top, which is 600 m high. If you want to enjoy the sunrise on the top, you should start very early in the morning. If you decide to leave early, make sure you hire a local guide because finding a path in the dark is hard. Lava fields are very steep and you must know the path to get to the top. You can go on your own if you are climbing during the daylight. You have to remember that there is no water or shade along the way, so you have to dress properly, so bring an umbrella and plenty of water. Once at the top, you can brew your coffee and cook eggs in the thermal water of still very active volcano. During the descent, if the weather is nice, you can enjoy the beautiful panorama of lakes and volcano in its background.

After the descent, you can relax and rest in the thermal water. From 2009, the volcanic activity did increase and there were several small earthquakes. This was the main reason that the volcanic alarm changed from "normal" to "intensive monitoring."
